These birds  (unless otherwise noted) were spotted just outside Memphis, Tennessee in the late spring, summer and fall.

American Goldfinch

Even I know these birds are American Goldfinch.

David Williams says:

The American Goldfinch in this picture are eating the dried seeds of the flowers.  These are male birds (see photo at left above).  Female birds are not so brightly marked (see photo at right above).

Barbolink says:

In the winter, these beautifully colored male goldfinches turn a much duller color and will be much harder to identify.

I took this photo on my mom and dad's feeder. Shows male and female colors very nicely. Photo taken March, 2000.

This bird was hopping around in my sprinkler.  No idea what it is.  Photo taken in April or May.

Rob states:

Brown Thrasher.  The pointy slightly decurved bill and long tail are good characteristics.  As is the fact that the breast spotting almost forms vertical lines.

This pair of cardinals were also enjoying the sprinkler and eating bugs back April or May.  This photo shows them in early October.

This looks like a common grackle, a member of the troupial 'family' (which includes such things as the northern Oriole, Montezuma's oropendola and caciques

This may be a Carolina Wren.  No bars on the tail, white stripe over eye.  Note the buff under side.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Some kind humming bird.  May be the same as previous bird.  Photo taken early September.

Rob says:

This is a male Ruby-throated hummingbird, which is the only regulary occuring hummer in your part of the country.  Metallic gree above, black chin, brilliant red throat, white below with dusky-green sides.

Some kind of bird eating thistle.  Photo taken early September.

Barbolink says:

This is probably a Pine Siskin.  They are small brown-streaked with varying amounts of yellow in the wings & tail.
