Jeremiah Bolling was the son of Benjamin (Flat Gap) Bolling, first known white settler in what was to become Pound, Wise County, VA. Jeremiah was born on the Edisto River, S.C., near Orangeburg on 18 Dec 1782; married in 1806; died 1852 in Wise (Russell) Co, VA. He was known to be living on Pound as early as 1810. His wife, Sallie Ward was born in 1786 in Waxhaus Settlement, SC. Jeremiah planted the first apple orchard in Wise County, using scions he carried in a gourd from NC (same gourd his father, Benjamin, had used to carry his gunpowder in the Revolutionary War.
